If you’re in the New York area, this Wednesday I’ll be giving a talk at an event organized by the Brooklyn College Library called “It’s All About the Book.” Also speaking will be Jason Epstein, one of the all-time great innovators in print publishing, and founder most recently of On Demand Books. Talks will be followed by a tour of “books as art” installations by a number of local artists, curators and librarians. It promises to be an interesting event, well worth the trek to Flatbush.
Ben’s pithy presentation at Brooklyn College was stimulating and fabulous. Ben, you’re a natural speaker and should go on tour! I appreciate your deep and wide knowledge of book related digital subjects. Loved that Moby Dick movie! Thanks for informing and educating me–and doing it with style and verve!
Thursday
Dear Ben Vershbow,
Your presentation at Brooklyn College yesterday was really good. It introduced so many new ideas to me and also made me wish I was inside the futureofthebook zeitgeist with you smart fellows.
I just graduated from Pratt Library School (getting better and less old-fashioned-book-identified by the minute) and I work at a small public library in Hastings (I often teach older people and immigrants how to set up email accounts to this day.)
I want the job at futureofthebook where you weed out the cranks and kooks from the books in progress blogs. I find this concept of yours to be such a brilliant take on collaborative writing and it also addresses the isolation of writers which can be crippling—without destroying the crucial solitude.
And, do you really think kids are reading when they “chat” and “myspace” each other? Those comments I glimpse on my kids screens sure ain’t Moby Dick!
You should have a “branch” in all the boroughs and counties around—
Thanks again for the engaging presentation.
