Each frame is a page of <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.tscpl.org\/ipac20\/ipac.jsp?session=1H43H2083614Y.54&#038;profile=m&#038;uri=link=3100008~!131713~!3100001~!3100002&#038;aspect=subtab24&#038;menu=search&#038;ri=1&#038;source=~!horizontest&#038;term=Moby-Dick.&#038;index=ALLTITL#focus\"> this edition<\/a> of the Melville text, painted and photographed and strung together in iMovie.<br \/>\n<embed src=\"http:\/\/www.vimeo.com\/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=182925\" quality=\"best\" scale=\"exactfit\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\"><\/embed><br \/>\nWhat you&#8217;re seeing is the entire book (actually two full copies &#8211; Alex can only paint on one side of each page because of bleed-through, so to get the whole text he had to double up). Here&#8217;s some of it stacked up in the studio (this is months of work):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/web.futureofthebook.org\/itinplace\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/mobystack.jpg\"><br \/>\nThe soundtrack is detritus gathered from web searches, a hunt for the white whale through a sea of tangents &#8211; appropriate, really, for the great book, which is so notoriously (and gloriously) tangential.<br \/>\nAlex: <i>&#8220;The soundtrack is built from searching &#8220;moby dick&#8221; on You Tube (I was looking for Orson&#8217;s Preacher from the Huston film from the fifties) I couldn&#8217;t find the preacher, but did find tons of Led Zep and drummers doing Bonzo and a little Orson&#8230;&#8230;. makes for a nice Melville in the end.&#8221;<\/i><br \/>\nAlso check out his animation, same technique, of <a href=\"http:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=wL0n9j6lGdw\"><i>Ulysses<\/i><\/a>.
