{"id":542,"date":"2006-01-12T17:15:53","date_gmt":"2006-01-12T17:15:53","guid":{"rendered":"\/ifbookblog\/?p=542"},"modified":"2006-01-12T17:15:53","modified_gmt":"2006-01-12T17:15:53","slug":"who_owns_the_network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/futureofthebook.org\/blog\/2006\/01\/12\/who_owns_the_network\/","title":{"rendered":"who owns the network?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Susan Crawford recently <a href=\"http:\/\/scrawford.blogware.com\/blog\/_archives\/2006\/1\/5\/1619868.html\">floated<\/a> the idea of the <span style=\"text-decoration:line-through;\">internet<\/span> network (see comments <a href=\"\/blog\/archives\/2006\/01\/who_owns_the_ne.html#c3629\">1<\/a> and <a href=\"\/blog\/archives\/2006\/01\/who_owns_the_ne.html#c3630\">2<\/a>) as a public trust that, like America&#8217;s national parks or seashore, requires the protection of the state against the undue influence of private interests.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;it&#8217;s fine to build special services and make them available online. But broadband access companies that cover the waterfront (literally &#8212; are interfering with our navigation online) should be confronted with the power of the state to protect entry into this self-owned commons, the internet. And the state may not abdicate its duty to take on this battle.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Others argue that a strong government hand will create as many problems as it fixes, and that only true competition between private, municipal and grassroots parties &#8212; across not just broadband, but multiple platforms like <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wireless_mesh_network\">wireless mesh networks<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Satellite_internet\">satellite<\/a> &#8212; can guarantee a free net open to corporations and individuals in equal measure.<br \/>\nDiscussing this around the table today, Ray raised the important issue of open content: freely available knowledge resources like textbooks, reference works, scholarly journals, media databases and archives. What are the implications of having these resources reside on a network that increasingly is subject to control by phone and cable companies &#8212; companies that would like to transform the net from a many-to-many public square into a few-to-many entertainment distribution system?
