Disposable Film Festival

Polyethylene Bag in Disposable Film Festival on Vimeo is in the running for Audience Choice Award. Long Gone Train

One of the first Artists I met in New York, Richard Heinsohn, came up from Nashville (where he beat a retreat from the cruel and fickle New York Art World to concentrate on his guitar and songs). He was up to visit our old Gallery gather some new paintings from a recent show there and play a couple of gigs in Dumbo. He stopped by Frost Street with our Buddy Major Tom Drum to see my show and collaborate on the long scroll…. and you know…. drink beer. Dave was practicing and the P.A. was up and the mikes hot and the nylon string classical guitar tuned up (not Richard’s normal instrument) and I asked Richard to play us a song then. I haven’t heard him in a few years and clearly Nashville has been good to his music. It’s nice to see someone grow in their talent over time. If you click on his name at the start of this post, you can check out his recent paintings too. We agreed that the key to life as an artist is: not to die.

The Addictions

So I’m back. The better half is back and sleeping has become less an act of rolling around in lonesome sheets till sunrise and more like, you know, sleeping. The screening is done and I was happy with the narrative arc of the pieces together as a group. I feel like I’ve been composing about a half hour stream of consciousness narrative over the last two, or three years in video. I have composed it all out of sequence and semi unconsciously and every time I do a screening (which is more and more frequent) I try to take the opportunity to chip away the extraneous bits and get to the core themes and images. I get closer and my present feeling is that I will have to overlap and edit the present sequence into a more coherent and shorter whole… Or Mash it up into a two channel diptych which worked beautifully at Monkeytown several months ago. Speaking of Mash ups, My favorite part of the weekend was hearing David Scarborough play some of his songs. He has appeared in cameo on several of the Frost Vlog videos helping me hang the big paintings, etc. I knew he sang, but it’s always nice when someone exceeds your expectations. At some point I did some timelapses of him playing (and his wife watching the whole set, sitting at his feet in what has to be the most romantic tableau I’ve seen in months). After we got the video equipment set up on Saturday night and after we’d had a few beers, I shot a video of him on my little flip cam singing in front of my animations. It was strange how the song and the pictures seemed to collide in happy tragedies.

Fridge Doors going up to form The Endless Last Supper… two left to finish in the puzzle… Something like Stone Hendge and I hung a large crowd and lost my balance on the irregular floor and had a great fall. It was like something out of a silent movie, or a cartoon. It felt like I hung in the air for a minute… disbelieving in gravity. Video Coming

Working at the studio and working at home. Got a new scanner printer and in the morning I drew 12 frames and fed them into the document feeder and scan scan scan, the whole stack is done. I could have saved days of my life with this thing. It may allow me to make a lot of relatively quick animations for videos, etc… or one big one?

Performed by five actors on a 3 x 6 platform, the epic tale unfolds in a radically reduced space that functions as a camera lens, enabling cinematic shifts in time, scale and location. Through the course of an hour, using only their bodies and a handful of props, the ensemble creates myriad characters and locales, transforming the raw platform into the bustle of London, the din of the courtroom, the dank bilge of the ship, and the rolling expanse of the ocean.

This whole process of writing is fraught with deep oceans of doubt. I try to remain positive about my self and my memories, but of course I am reliving some idiot times. This is an old video from two or so years ago, but is now in HD and properly deinterlaced. The sound track is a mash up of Glass’ Einstein on the Beach, playing at various speeds.

First Frost

The folks at 17 Frost Street were kind enough to give me some space to start knocking out drawings in The Little Prince (Le Petit Prince as it’s actually in French) while Aakash Nihalani installed his tape show and the band rehearsed. It was a nice way to start this new projet which I am imagining as a sort of modular, multi platform, multimedia memoir of my time at the turn of the century in Paris…

Though I hope it will be open enough to use as part of my ongoing blogging/vlogging experiment, the end result should be a fairly focused narrative electronic book.

I learned recently that they found St-Exupery’s downed plane in the sea. Not only this, but the German who shot him down came forward to own the kill. The irony was that Exupery was the Nazi pilot’s hero and had inspired him to fly in the first place. He had carried with him the fear and dread for all these years that he had shot down the writer/aviator and when they found the plane he knew from his flight log that it was his mission and his gun. Small world indeed.

Monday I went to see my old friend Javier rehearse with SINEPARADE in a new space, tucked away in a little hidden corner of Williamsburg. I did some timelapses of the band and Aakash Nihalani making a mural out of tape. Plus there’s some footage that MariaNYC shot at my installation last week and a garbage truck full of tomatoes, and the music here is an old song Javier made for an e-book of mine: Morococo, and then on the way to the L train we passed a parade of cop cars: 20 fucking cop cars. A good Monday.

Hanging Myself

Not funny really in this time of Infinite Jests, but maybe it is really exactly how I feel. I mean in the sense of eternal return, or Metampsychosis, or however you spell it and whatever Joyce was talking about…. I’m hanging the show. I feel like a worker… in the Marxist sense of that word: working on the ladders with the back into it. I mean to say that hanging a book is a physical act. I’ve been training for it like a boxer at the gym.. but my fucking thumbs are still weak for the push pins and the map pins and the pins and needles and needles and pins…..feel like a carpenter… feel like Christ crucified… stigmata on my thumb. There was a rainbow around the moon tonight at ten and I ran up to the roof to watch the lunatic clouds flowing by all back lit in a Pink Floyd prism and I was thinking about Rick Wright dying and David Foster Wallace hanging himself from the end of an infinite jest and the stink of sepsis fills the house from the necrotic tumor of my slowly dying dog and it was another day at the vet with free falling finance and the threat of reemergent Republicans buzzing in my ear from my little A.M. radio I use to keep my self from going insane, or it’s opposite. So I thought of the Organ opening to Us and Them from the Dark Side of the Moon and decided to share it with you. A little memorial service from the cathedral of cold front clouds.

We showed Orson Whales on an i-phone propped on the bar and then played with two channel projection in the back room. It’s nice to have little souvenirs of late nights.

Dylan Played Prospect Park in Brooklyn. He sounded pretty good and I enjoyed how he works the key boards these days.

Spent a lot of yesterday watching Renaldo and Clara on You Tube. In the way it uses music and reality and fiction and improv and documentary it feels like online video long before there was such a thing. I’m so glad to have found it after all these years of wondering. I even like how it’s divided up into 53 sections by someone called Kafka 05. Poetry is a virus.

Another experiment with the glitched camera. This time I placed a layer of plastic wrap over my screen and shot old videos from Vimeo in full screen mode while drawing over them with sharpie markers on the protected screen. I then downloaded the archived films and re edited them. This is a fairly direct response to paintings I went into yesterday. The music here is a remix of Miles Davis and Bill Evans’ Blue In Green.

Tales of the cock at the empty store. This was from the dawn of the holiday… went out with ladies to one of these places that has “Mixologists” instead of bartenders… Lot’s of odd cocktails that conspired to give me the worst hangover I’ve had in years. Upset, sleepless thinking about my new camera that is now completely fucked up. I don’t know what happened. One minute I’m happily uploading Coney Island footage and the next minute the camera went on the fritz; didn’t drop it, didn’t get it wet. It’s only a year old and I’ve treated it like a baby. Can’t really afford a new one and getting it repaired seems pricey too. Anyway there’s a strange beauty in it’s broken image and I’ll have to revert to photomotion and animation I suppose. As it is, I’m drawing in my new big pad and as I put this blog together I am shocked at how much the thumbnail for the video looks like one of my dad’s paintings. Ghosts in the machine, perhaps?

Recently, I’ve had cause to want to point out the documentary bits out of my last couple of shows in Portland and New York. They were extruded onto the blog in bits and pieces several months back. I thought it might be nice to have them all together in one entry so that I could just forward that link to people. It becomes something like a four channel video piece if you can play them all at the same time, or a story if you play them in order. The box gif is new.
