Did a Birthday Art Crawl Friday and actually had a nice time talking to people in the Picasso show and running into old friends from the Allan Stone Gallery. It felt the Neo Good Old Days… and boy could that Picasso fucker paint. It was one of those rainy Chelsea spring days where you somtimes have to duck into a little pub for a whiskey while the rain blows over. It reminded me of this Coltrane song and also this older vide with The Velvets and Nico doing Chealsea girl. 2006 I think. It was raining then too.

Hanging Myself http://futureofthebook.org/itinplace/2008/09/23/me_hanging_myself_right_now/ Wed, 24 Sep 2008 03:52:25 +0000 http://www.futureofthebook.org/itinplace/wp-content/archives/2008/09/me_hanging_myself_right_now.html studyinjoyce.jpg
Not funny really in this time of Infinite Jests, but maybe it is really exactly how I feel. I mean in the sense of eternal return, or Metampsychosis, or however you spell it and whatever Joyce was talking about…. I’m hanging the show. I feel like a worker… in the Marxist sense of that word: working on the ladders with the back into it. I mean to say that hanging a book is a physical act. I’ve been training for it like a boxer at the gym.. but my fucking thumbs are still weak for the push pins and the map pins and the pins and needles and needles and pins…..feel like a carpenter… feel like Christ crucified… stigmata on my thumb. LOL. music here is some odd Brian Wilson post Smile mid mad period song. Fucking lovely and perfect fit for my raw time lapse. More to come…

Sonny Rollins played Central Park last night. He’s walking a little stooped over, but he still can blow that horn. If New York were Jericho, the walls would all be down. I’d been scanning and drawing all day and my head wasn’t really open to the sounds. I slowly warmed up and the old foot starts tapping and then the band drove the sound on one number (Sonny Please, from his recent album of the same name) so hard that the whole audience began to go slightly insane. It ended in a spontaneous standing ovation. I can’t remember the last time I heard a group of players really get into the cracks of my body and soul and those of my neighbors’ and sort of lift the entire audience to some new dimension that is not quite earth and not quite space… better than any drug, or drink… and certainly more plural than sex. Makes me believe in Jazz again. Viva Colossus!

]]> The Loneliest Monk http://futureofthebook.org/itinplace/2008/02/06/the_lonelies_monk/ Thu, 07 Feb 2008 03:54:01 +0000 http://www.futureofthebook.org/itinplace/wp-content/archives/2008/02/the_lonelies_monk.html The video is an experiment using piano notes from various Monk vids I pulled off of Youtube. I was watching Straight No Chaser last night and I’d always felt that certain moments in a Monk performance are like shards of colored glass from stained glass window… they sort of hang out there all alone. I wondered if it might not be fun to try and reassemble them into some new abstract shape. It would be an interesting electronic instrument that allowed you to play notes and video clips of you favorite musicians. It seems somehow related to how I’m using the page layouts of the Time Life book of Collectibles as a back bone for abstract paintings.facenotface.jpg
